200th anniversary gold proof piedfort Sovereign graded PF 70 Ultra Cameo by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. In 2017 The Royal Mint celebrated 200 years of the modern Sovereign by authorising a special reverse design for these coins, inspired by the first examples, issued in 1817. We’re all familiar with the image of Saint George and the dragon, created by Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci. It’s become closely associated with these 22-carat gold coins down the centuries, remaining a fixture of annual issues. However, the design has been modified over the years, switching the weapon held by England’s patron saint from a broken spear to a sword and removing the stylised garter motif that originally encircled the central figures. These historic details have been restored on 2017 Sovereigns in honour of the important anniversary.
